The Oakes Folks

Kin - Page 3 - Descendants of Ann Maywood and Charles Adams

Home Documents Charts People Musings

This is another loose page found in the Kin book that has more information on Ann Maywood, Charles Adams and their descendants. The copy is in very poor shape and written on what seems to be tissue paper, but it appears to have scanned well. I don’t know who the author is, but I make a guess at the end of the post.

Descendants of Ann Maywood and Charles Adams

So it looks like we have Ann Maywood’s siblings listed first with their spouses:

Ann Maywood and Charles Adams

Rebecca Maywood and George Braidwood

Eliza Maywood and George P. Oakes (1)

Louisa Maywood and John Whitters (protestant north of Ireland (2), 2 adopted daughters)

Jane Maywood and Hiram O’Dell had children George and Fred. George died. Fred is professor of architecture at U of M (3).

George Maywood went to Montana and married there

John Maywood married Minnie and had sons Charley, Bill, and George, and daughters Jessie and Iris

“Belle” (Isabella) Maywood married Eben Rutherford and had children Eben, Lottie, Myra, Lida, Charley, and Anna.

Armour Maywood had sons Ames and Charles

Quite the family.

1 I can’t tell from this if George P. Oakes is any relation to George E. Oakes who shows up later. Could be an uncle of George E. and a brother to John (George E.’s father), but that is pure speculation.

2 I cannot quite make out the phrase after John Whitters. I went with “protestant north of Ireland” because it makes the most sense, but Ireland really looks like Island to me. From an Oakes perspective it doesn’t matter too much as John ends up being a great-uncle to OP and married into the family at that.

3 I assume this is the University of Michigan. A check of the faculty records should show that.

Continuing, we have this great little story.

Charles and Ann had 4 children. Charlotte (first young white child in East Tawas. Indians made leather cradle with bead work on it for her.) Albert Fellows lived to be only 18. Charles died in infancy. ~Harriet~

First settlers in East Tawas.

Philly’s Milk of Magnesia was made by a Mr. Fellows a relative of Ruth Fellows Adams.

It isn’t clear if Albert Fellows and this Mr. Fellows are related but they probably are. They could even be the same person. It also isn’t clear what the relationship of Ruth Fellows Adams is to Charles Adams or the Fellows boys. Is this her married name or her maiden name? *[dwd – It turns out that Ruth Fellows Adams is Charles Adams’ mother]*.

Charlotte is Charlotte Armour Adams, OP’s grandmother.

Listed last are more on the children of Eben and Belle Rutherford.

Children of Eben and Belle Rutherford

Eben married Mary (?)

Lottie married Frank J. Walker children Glenn married Agnes Megher, Earl married Effie Stockwell, Floyd married Marion Harding.

Myra married J. Hilts. Children Bertha, Charles +

Lida died young.

Charley married late in life

Anna (“Nan”) married Alton J. Walker. children Morton married Ida Silberton, Jack married May, Layton A “Joe Pete”

This last bit isn’t really relevant to the Oakes story either, but it’s curious that Eben and Belle are given special consideration on this page. This leads me to think that this paper was written by a single person closely related to them. The handwriting is consistent throughout to the untrained eye even though the ink varies. Could this be the work of Charlotte Armour Adams? She would be the niece of Eben and Belle and could have been quite close to them.
